Awards Get Applause: Why Having an Awards Marketing Strategy Is Good for You & Your Business

Oct 25, 2023

This month Women in Innovation SA celebrate their tenth year of the WINN Awards, recognising the achievements of over 100 amazing women through categories such as maths+data to the arts. Seeing a photo including winners from year one onwards brought a massive smile to my face as I was privileged to be there at ground zero to help it come in to being through my role at The Adelaide Advertiser with News Corp.

Media love awards as they tick each division’s boxes. For editorial they uncover and give substance to local good news stories. For marketing they create positive brand association and for sales, the bigger industry ones create big revenue streams as the winners advertise, often in the industry’s own newspaper inserted magazine. It wasn’t a hard sell to get agreement from the MD for The Advertiser to be the founding partner and venue provider, especially where this ticked every box for Win Winn (sorry, couldn’t help myself).

In general I have a long and happy history with business awards. Awards done well take on an ecosystem of their own, showering benefits to a broad cross-section of the business community. They give industry peak bodies a focal point for their calendar and a sustainable revenue stream of entry fees and awards attendance. Winners and nominees get credibility and owned and earned media content, as well as meeting and networking with like minded people. The story tellers get stories.

There’s no losers in being part of the awards collective – I came runner up a few years ago for NewsMedia executive of the year, but in doing so got to meet the winner, the editor of the Fiji Times, a passionate advocate for press freedom and media independence through three coups where censorship and intimidation of journalists had been rife.  Amazing person, amazing career

One of the (relatively unique) services Inspike offers is Award Marketing, as part of our wider Thought Leadership process under the earned and owned media channels. Maximising the value of the awards process, which can be time consuming, is critical to creating return for effort. Between the Inspike consultants we have submitted dozens of submissions, judged hundreds, and won a good number of national and international gongs. We’ve also called out a good number of scams – if it starts as ‘our magazine has identified you as one of Australia’s most successful startups, just buy an ad to be featured’, then you didn’t actually win. Sorry.

Awards are more than just shiny trophies or certificates; they're valuable assets that can open doors, build credibility, and differentiate you from the competition. They serve as public validation of your expertise, products, or services, fostering trust and admiration among your peers and potential clients. Here are some compelling reasons why awards can be a game-changer for your career and business:

Credibility Boost

Receiving awards in your field signifies excellence and expertise. They serve as third-party endorsements, which can enhance your reputation and make you more appealing to clients and partners. Being recognised as an industry leader sets you apart from the crowd.

Networking Opportunities

Awards ceremonies are excellent platforms to network with like-minded individuals and potential collaborators. The connections made at such events can lead to new partnerships, innovative ideas, and even new business ventures.

Marketing Potential

Winning awards can become a central component of your marketing strategy. They provide fresh content for your website, social media, and email marketing campaigns. This external recognition can be the perfect endorsement to convince potential customers to choose your products or services.
